Photoshop in the Field (intermediate) August 25 -- 31 2003 Bruce Dale is offering a class designed specifically for those who would like to work with digital cameras using Photoshop on laptop computers. Attendance is limited to 8 students, small enough to give individual attention when needed. Although the emphasis is on Photoshop, we'll spend several mornings photographing in some of my favorite places. We'll use a digital projector to help explain techniques and I'll have several digital cameras on hand for you to test. Students must have a laptop computer and a good knowledge of Photoshop basics. Bruce has taught Photoshop in the past, and uses it daily in his advertising and corporate photography. You'll learn useful shortcuts and real world applications of this marvelous tool.. He currently uses both Photoshop 6.0 and 7.0 running on Apple and IBM platforms. During evenings, Bruce will project samples of his photography with an emphasis on how the photographs were made and he'll show you ways he has used Photoshop to accomplish simple tasks and challenging advertising assignments. He'll show you the tricks in shooting and seaming together panoramic images (most of the images seen in the "Panoramic Gallery" on his website were shot with digital cameras). Our classroom and lodging for the week will be in a beautiful location alongside the Pecos River about 25 miles from Santa Fe.You should plan on arriving after noon on Monday to meet with your fellow participants and to get settled. My wife, Joyce and I will be around to say hello. Fritz and Helen have a special dinner planned for us that same evening at 6:00 that you won't want to miss. Classes begin the next morning, after breakfast in the lodge. We'll start by going over the important steps of setting up your system and pay special attention to calibration and interpretation of LCD screens. (One trade off working with laptops is the screen - I'll show you how I deal with that and demonstrate the EyeOne software which does a great job on laptop computers.) We'll make a file that should be a big help in evaluating your results. Other early topics will include discussions of various file formats and tradeoffs inherent in some of them. During the week, we'll move on to working with your photographs and the all-important first steps: Analyzing the image, setting black and white points, and making global color corrections. We'll do this using layers without ever changing the original file parameters. We'll learn to print for maximum effect to one of our Epson printers and I'll share methods I've developed for "burning" and "dodging" to give your image more impact. We'll cover cropping, resolution, and use of the marquee and lasso tools. Recognizing that this course can be intense, we will break away from our computers on several occasions to photograph nearby subjects. |
